A Very Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day-an entire day in celebration of love-has arrived once again, but who will show up with it?
By nature I’m a hopeless romantic wearing my heart on my sleeve, and therefore I’m all for the sappy clichés, the obligatory dinner reservations and dressing up for the occasion to celebrate love for its own sake. For many couples though, especially when Valentine’s falls mid-week or when chaotic kids are running around, it’s hard to justify the expense of a sitter, some overpriced food, and perhaps even investing in something new to wear, when watching a flick is just so much easier and less expensive.
But that’s really not the point, is it?
The whole sentiment surrounding Valentine’s Day is that we create the time to reflect, honour, and cherish those who bring love and light into our lives. It serves as a reminder to check in with the ones closest to our hearts-be it family, friends, or a significant other-and recognize them with care by speaking their love languages. Not sure what those are? Take the quiz for you or your partner here.
For us, making quality time hasn’t always come easy, and just because we live under the same roof doesn’t mean we’re connected. Especially now raising a son, it takes effort on both our parts to continue to grow as a couple, get dressed up and date each other, rather than settle for a very detached Netflix and chill every single weekend. But every time we do, I’m grateful for the precious few hours, the nostalgic glimpse back to where it all began, and the bond that continues to progress despite any challenge we are faced with.
Luckily in Victoria there are many beautiful locations and romantic restaurants to make for the perfect date, and while a night on the town may indeed be expensive, I’m a firm believer in the investment of the overall experience and in each other.
No relationship is perfect, and usually in this day and age, quality communication is lacking which can be detrimental to the longevity of happiness. Therefore it is so important to make time to hear, understand, and see each other, not only on Valentine’s Day, but as a conscious lifestyle choice deserving of attention year round.
Life is too short and unpredictable to not love whole-heartedly, and to not believe you’ll grow old with the one you’re with. Every good relationship is deserving of devoted uninterrupted time together, and I hope you have just that with the ones you love today.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
