The Graduate Year: A mom's perspective on the final chapter at Kids & Company
As a stay-at-home entrepreneur and twin mom of three, it's been a privilege to find quality, flexible childcare so close to home at Kids & Company. My first born, Hudson, is a Kidco graduate who enjoyed his time at the centre very much. He is now in grade three, but still has fond memories of his classrooms and friends made there.
Once the twins were 18 months old, I made the decision to enrol them too. There was a familiarity going through the process a second time, but a lot of uncertainty, too.
What if they got split up? How would they interact with others? Would they branch off or keep together?
Would double the emotions be too hard on me, and on them?
Many of the same teachers from Hudson's days remained there and gave me a sense of relief. I also had great communication with the centre, both through text messages and updates on their own app called Kindertales.
The drop offs were hard at first- lots of tears, drop and runs, with a whole lot of faith that the process would get easier- and it did.
Soon enough, there were no tears at drop offs.
Soon enough, I got to witness my inseparable twins grow confident relationships with new friends.
Soon enough, the photos uploaded on the app gave me all the reassurance that my momma heart needed. Belly laughs, focused thinking, creativity in their artwork, outdoor play, concentrated circle time, and developing little minds filled the news feed- and I was filled with relief and joy.
With Kids & Company, not only do I create space to allow myself a needed break in parenting- to work, to breathe, and to take time for self-care- but I also give my children the opportunity to learn and grow independence in a classroom environment.
Kids & Company is quite literally preparing them for the school days not too far in the horizon. It's a place where they foster social relationships, listening skills and so much cognitive development. They understand how to transition from one activity to another as a group, go outside to burn off some steam, and then come back in for a healthy lunch provided by the centre.
As their mother, it's truly been special to witness how much has changed in their final graduate year.
Their focus at drop off seems so streamlined to join in with whatever activity the rest of the classroom is doing. They have confident goodbyes with me and then happily skip over to the friends that have made an impact over the years. They are an adorable little group of kids, all so familiar with one another, and they truly take pride in listening to their teachers and having fun, too.
From my perspective, Kids & Company is bridging the gap from home life, to school-readiness in the most seamless and organic way possible. Once I complete my work for the day, I can't wait to pick them up and pour into quality time with them, and with a refreshed set of eyes.
We've loved Kids & Company over the years. It truly feels like family, and we are so grateful for the learning curriculum, flexibility and sense of community they provide.
