TOP 10 CHILDREN’S BOOKS

Every household has a few favourite books that excite and educate their little humans, but rotating through new ones can be necessary to keep things interesting and novel for them. Hudson has loved his books since I can remember and insists on reading one every night as part of his bedtime routine. Now at two and a half, his attention span is ready for more gentle reads with engaging pictures, developmental questions, and song lyrics for mom and dad to entertain. If you’re on the hunt for new children’s books for your own or as a gift to someone you know, I’ve narrowed down a list to share.
Hudson’s top 10 favourite books that are sure to capture the attention of a developing toddler:
1. Pete the Cat
For about two weeks straight we were under tight authority to continue singing about Pete and his shoes. Hudson loves to guess the colours that Pete’s shoes will turn and then we sing the chorus together. There’s a good moral to go along with the story and it comes with a downloadable song if you’re too tired to showcase your vocals!
2. The Big Game
With a hockey-playing dad teaching him the sport, it was no surprise that this book won Hudson over after an initial read. It has beautiful illustrations and tells a story of a boy and his anticipation for an important game as goalie.
3. It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
Just in time for Halloween, these classic characters come together to celebrate 50 years of Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin.
4. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
An adorable story about caterpillar who eats its way through a huge amount of yummy foods that all kids love to eat, so this one definitely keeps Hudson enthralled time and time again. At the end the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, so it reminds kids to eat well so they can become big and strong! Also available is the plush caterpillar seen below that reverses into a butterfly!
5. 5 Minute Biscuit Stories
Hudson has always enjoyed listening to the adorable adventures of biscuit the puppy. This book includes 12 classic 5-minute Biscuit stories which I find to be just the right length before bedtime now that Hudson is two and a half. This adorable plush toy is available too to read along with!
6. Sports Illustrated Kids Goodnight Hockey
This is a perfect hockey story for both boys and girls with beautiful pictures and short rhyming verses throughout the book. I absolutely love this one-short and sweet if you don’t feel like reading much right before bedtime!
7. 5 Little Monkeys
If you don’t already have Five Little Monkeys, it’s an absolute must to add to your collection. Highly rated on Amazon’s children’s book for being a classic favourite for generations. Finger puppets also available to make story time even more entertaining!
8. Oh The Places You’ll Go
The highest ranked Amazon book of Hudson’s Top 10 collection, this Dr. Seuss story is both inspirational and irreplaceable. It reminds everyone-young and old-that they are capable of anything and everything you set your mind to.
9. Tickle
As seen in the opening photo, Hudson absolutely loves this new book called Tickle, mostly because he anticipates big tickles coming from his parents every turn of the page.
10. The Night Before Christmas
Last but not least, a wonderful classic called The Night before Christmas which has been re-written many times, however, I personally think this is the best version for kids and makes a perfect gift right before the holidays.
On our next to get list:
Love You Forever
I completely forgot about this book until I was browsing on Amazon building this list. This book meant so much to me when I was a little girl, as my mom would read it so often that I still remember it as being emotional and heartfelt now. Definitely on my next to get list!
